Basically, the whole virtual memory system is very very hard to do right, and it just doesn't happen that often. People do try, and some things work, but in general, linux software still sucks.

There is no free lunch. I just want linux to be a fun toy. And I want to be able to do that. Of course, I also want to do some production stuff with it, but I'm not at all trying to make it a production system. There are too many factors that have to match, even if you use free software, etc.

But if you can make your kernels more like where they already are, and leave the tail to worry about it, then you can have a much happier experience. (And you can always upgrade down the road to a very stable kernel!)

If one uses the command line option
$mkinitcpio -p linux_with_memory_pressure
or the migration tool that comes with a $6 distro, you get something that isn't buggy.

Actually, you don't actually have to build the kernel yourself. You can actually use an installer, or you can just download the current linux-image and rename it. The mkinitcpio tool on the command line will still do the right thing, but it's still not very hard to build your own kernel.

This is a nice way to get crazy with your kernels when you want to to figure out what goes where. (much like debuggers)

But I'd say that a sane home user will rarely ever want to mess with a kernel like that, and even then, there is no penalty at all.

Maybe I should call it a re-invented version of the memmap kernel stuff, instead of a memory-pressure kernel.

NOTE: this is based on the code that was in 2.6.21-rc3, that I also rebuilt here to make it less buggy, and I think that it still does what it should. I could also have included all the patches that make it so much more stable, but that didn't seem like it would have been useful. But if you want to play with a real magic monster kernel, then go ahead! (and you'll need to do some mods to make it happy.)
