On the topic of my reference to the Arma 3 community on the previous post , I'd like to explain why this is the case. Whilst I'd love for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising to become something of a classic (even though its difficult to define what thats even meant by now) its never going to achieve this without Arma 3.
Dragon Rising is quite unlike other modern shooters, both in appearance and in gameplay. If the setting - a seemingly far-off future where the world of first-person shooters has turned into a full-on medieval, hand-to-hand melee combat simulation - doesn't give it away, then certainly its gameplay does. It borrows liberally from console-style action games, but gives you the option to manually and lethally wound your opponents with rifles and pistols. It's unlike any shooter I can think of, but not in a particularly positive way. The decision to divert from the norm is a bold one, and the result isn't a particularly clever one. Though it's hardly a bad game, it's hard to recommend Dragon Rising to anyone who already enjoys a good FPS; it'll appeal more to those who are already sold on the genre.
I choose to focus on Arma 3 because it was released earlier than Global Operations, and I wanted to explore it more in-depth. But, even more importantly, because of the unique approach Bohemia Interactive took with the game. They took the time to develop a very true-to-life, realistic military simulation, and they're still focusing on doing that.
But the difference in the approach to the development of the two titles lies in the way they handled the difficulty. While Operation Flashpoint has a gradual, steady progression, Arma 3 starts you out with three-tier guns and slowly opens the experience to you as you play.
