for the programs you want to back up, you create a set of programs to back up. simply put, go into the programs you want to backup, and choose file->save and backup. you will then be prompted to save it to a folder of your choice. this backup will of course contain everything you have backed up and should be made in the program folder, not saved to your desktop. as mentioned, check the box to back up your entire boot drive and any selected external drives, if applicable. if you want the most secure protection, encrypt your backup using an encryption/decryption utility. you can use truecrypt for linux, it works with the mac in osx or use truecrypt for windows. for this backup, i didn't use a time capsule since i didn't really have one or needed it and decided to make it bootable and attempt to restore it after the process of backing up. the option to boot from another partition enables the restoration process, and if you have an external drive you will probably want to clone this to your boot drive or hold it in place for the restoration of your boot drive after a file is undeleted.
for windows users, there are too many utilities to name but one of the best is carbon copy cloner, which is a premier bootable utility that allows you to back up one or two partitions. this will create a bootable copy of your windows hdd and create a cd/dvd, so you can copy it to another windows machine or use the backup utility to restore to another windows machine if necessary. the great thing about carbon copy cloner and it's many siblings is that they can help you back up and recover if you do ever lose files, go read the carbon copy cloner article to learn more.
by default, bitlocker creates an automatic daily recovery volume (or other recovery volumes as configured by bitlocker recovery options control) when a recovery key is created, if the protected drive is connected to a computer that is running an operating system bitlocker is configured to recover. the protected volume will be located on the removable storage volume of your choice if the protected volume was created (default) or on the boot volume if the volume was created by bitlocker. so bitlocker always creates a volume named recoveryvol1 regardless of which volume the recovery key is created. for this guide, we'll assume you'd like to back up the recovery volumes using a nas device, for example. to set the recovery key in the backup script, you'd add the following at the end of the backup script (or earlier): target drive: $blrecovery_volumecombo and then select the recovery volume and press the create button. when you create a protected volume, you can have bitlocker automatically create the recovery volume for you on the next boot (disconnected). the mac is a first-class citizen. it uses a sophisticated and extensive file system called hfs+ which only allows a few tweaks to data, called acl's which act as handles on files and folders, and it has a powerful file browser called finder that makes all file navigation and searching extremely easy. for the most part this is the best filesystem option for data, and people who require the linux equivalent of time machine are advised to use a linux distribution and go the route of external backup and/or encryption. i use time machine on a time-based schedule which backs up my entire boot drive and any selected external drive for offline data, and data can be restored on my boot drive, my second boot drive, or a time capsule that backs up to icloud, and icloud backs it up to icloud and the primary backup is held on the internet. 5ec8ef588b
