During the season the Originals' family is split further when Damon's half-brother, Jeremy Gilbert, was secretly turned into a vampire by Katherine. At the same time, Stefan, Alaric and Rebekah were all turned into vampires by the Original vampire Katherine. When the truth comes out, Rebekah is killed and the Originals know that the original vampire Katherine has risen from the grave once again. Katherine enlists Katherine's daughter, Sarah, to help kill Stefan. With Alaric and Damon trapped inside St. Andrews Hotel, Stefan kills Katherine and drives her back down to the ground where she is buried. For the first time, the Originals meet a new family, the Micskey's (Matt', Tyler's, and Rebekah') and the Salvatores (Stefan', Elena's, and Damon'). For the Micskey's, it is love at first sight when they see Elena and Damon as vampires. When the Micskeys catch word of Stefan', Elena', and Damon's return, they have a vampire wedding ceremony with Damon and Stefan. The Originals are played off as monsters. When the vampires feed on the Original's blood, the Micskey's remain awake while the Original's fall to the ground asleep. The Micskeys are unaware of the feeds in the past with their cousins' blood. Matt', Tyler', and Rebekah know what it is they have to do when the Original's have fallen asleep. They must mark the faces of their fallen family as vampires. Rebekah attempts to drink the first Original's blood, only to come awake too early, and be forced to confess to the Micskeys what happened. Luckily, Matt is turned during their first moment together, which keeps them from becoming a family. Rebekah also informs them the true cause of the original vampires rise is the blood from Katherine. The Original's begin to hunt down Katherine. Klaus gives in to his drinking of Original's blood. After he is torn between being with Katherine or the Original's, he decides that he wishes to be with Katherine. He tells her he loves her in the moment before he dies. After that, they ask for an eternity together. Matt then makes a deal with his family by not drinking any of his blood. Tyler almost goes to a hospital to be treated for his condition. He learns that he is a werewolf. He tries to get his help in changing his condition. Rebekah and Stefan have an epic fight that ends with Rebekah getting stabbed with a sword.
