Almost willfully, the composer has prepared a cycle of evening moods based on another aspect of Rilkes personality. He and his wife, poet June Kuramoto, preferred to spend their late years indoors and their hours spent reading a book in harmony with the hours of day. Indeed, as a gifted translator, Rilke was a master of using language to convey its vibration. Like the dew on the petals of a rose or the candle of an ember, a line in his poems can reverberate deeply. As intently as his lines caress and strike to the heart of emotions, Lauridsen has made his evocative night songs pour out of baroque and romantic period strings, voice and organ and blithe classical folk music. His current effort, Nocturnes, evokes the wistfulness of a wistful tone poem. The CD is intended for singers at any level, but at its heart is the Leipzigs Requiem for a lost generation. With its solemn and muted tones, it asks of its listeners a lifelong vigilance and an effort to keep the spirit alive.
It was a ray of light that struck the earth on Christmas Day. At its inception, a quake occurred that has shaken the earth since. For Lauridsen it was a sign of hope in the face of dark forces. A war-torn country, struggling over the power of words to tell its story- a war being waged within, as he recognizes in Das atelier: Im Oratorium der Fotografen, where the photos of the deceased are shared, and the images whispered of a commonality in the suffering. For the composer, the earth quake was a paradigm shift in consciousness that spurred his present concern with the immense cultural memory accessible in music. It is now that a concerted effort is necessary to pass on this gift to the next generation of music lovers and musicians. His new book, The Hymn of Creation and The Geography of the Human Heart are individual expressions of an ongoing dialogue with the sacred that asks the listener to interrogate and expand our own senses of communal bliss and suffering. Generation after generation, he says, the hardest work is to understand the song of the soul and to sing the song of creation for its audience. The triumph of his music is that it makes this asking accessible through the heart. With its musical forms, it asks the listener to remember, celebrate, and meditate on the humility of a creature before its creator.
