Removing the two Performance pads felt like a liberating act, especially as these pads form part of the Serato-exclusive Trinity bundle, with the D-pad pad/Cue's and the A Hot Cue/B Hot Cue buttons being remapped to the performance pads. This is a sensible decision, as the control room and performance pads sit in the same part of the unit and share the same circuitry. Still, one option that is always welcome is the possibility of having fully configurable controls: its fine to make things easier on the go but there are times when you want to be able to tweak a knob for precise or semi-exact settings, not just perform a preset. Thankfully, the performance pads allow for this. The pads have a good range of travel, with a rock/frisbee grip feel and decent feedback. The buttons can also be programmed to different settings via button customization, so there are options for any pairing of controller and unit.

Battery life is listed as 5 hours per battery. Bear in mind that this is directly linked to the unit. In our experience, a fully charged unit with a half full battery pack lasts a long time (compared to other controllers, anyway).

The DJ-505 is a great controller for the Serato DJ platform. Its big and feature-packed, packed with excellent manual controls. The range of pads is great and the FX and rekordbox compatibility is a very welcome feature, particularly on decks that can be triggered from a PC. It does have some rough edges which have been addressed in updates, including multiple boards, USB transport and, on the software side, split-screen DJing. Serato DJ Pro sounds like it wont have many bugs, which may be good news for features like creative recording and scratching as the software now offers them as separate options from traditional DJing. We hope to hear about these improvements soon.

If youre looking for a controller with some cool features, the DJM-SX1 is perfect for you. At over £500 it is considerably more expensive than most controllers, but it comes with many features that are unrivaled by its price. It has hi-res controls with a widescreen display and a fast USB connection. It also has a separate sound card and MIDI interface and you can use it with all major DJ apps. Its also very powerful and will support 2048-tracks with time and pitch scaling for high quality mixes. Of the Serato DJ gear we were asked to review, our editor-in-chief, Ryan and I were most looking forward to testing out the Roland DJ 505. We both use the 505 and DJ apps on PC and mobile phones, and after throwing it in our bags and carrying it around, we quickly found it to be small, lightweight and very ergonomic. We both liked the effects and sound design, but we were worried by the lack of a FX loop in comparison to some of the other Serato controllers. The first notable thing about this DJ controller is its weight. Its light, and due to its compact size, you can carry it easily in your bag. The second notable thing is its ergonomics. It is made from metal, but its small size allows you to fold it and stow it away quickly. The bottom can be reversed 180 degrees and this allows you to stand up, or lay on it flat when youre using it. The controls are easily accessible and well thought out. The jogwheels are quiet and responsive, and the PITCH, TIME and FX buttons are buttons that you press, not scroll through a menu. With this DJ controller, there are 4 functional buttons along the top of the controller, and the FX button is located on the right. The left and right buttons are used to select and use patterns which are stored in the unit. These are effectively presets, much like the DJs on wheels and samplers use. An additional button, FX Select, allows you to access your patterns. The Deck buttons are used to select and control the tracks, much like the ones on record decks. A second button to control the decks, which has both serato and record pitch/time control, is accessed by pressing the top deck button twice. You can switch the decks to other type of deck, or back to serato from record mode by pressing the top deck button once. Youll notice that the unit tracks the decks and sends them signals in time with your performance, allowing you to jump from one song to the next seamlessly. Youll also notice that the buttons are quite responsive. The serato siren and the Rekordbox command are fairly sensitive.
