Assume that you guys know what a bunch of gamers have been doing wrong for almost the last 10 years. Sure, you may not be as revolutionary as Nintendo and Sega, but at least don't act like you don't deserve the title of "Genesis' biggest fan" too...
Shikigami no Shiro is one of the strangest and most underrated titles on the Sega Genesis. It was developed by Taito and published by Sega in Japan, and it marked the first time Sega licensed a game out of Japan. Whereas Sonic or Wonder Boy were a lot of fun and had a distinct tone, Shikigami no Shiro was much darker and much more abstract. The game revolves around a tiny girl who takes control of a small animal, slowly erasing its memory of her existence. With each move, the game becomes more fun and more challenging. As it's the first game out of Japan, the English translation is strange and rough. The gameplay can be monotonous, and the mechanics aren't always intuitive, but the game did introduce a few genre staples such as the ghost-like enemies and the mysterious second player ability. Most importantly, it's a masterpiece of presentation, and its beautiful character animations were praised by critics when released.
One of the newest entries in the series, Sonic CD was the first Sonic game to feature multiplayer options, and it's the first game in the series to use the DVD-ROM format. The game was also the first Sonic game to feature huge stages and realistic characters. The game also introduced the first instance of Green Hill Zone being used as a hub world. The island setting and the game's ability to mix old and new gameplay mechanics made Sonic CD popular among both fans and newcomers. Like the previous installments in the franchise, Sonic CD was praised for its wonderful visual design, and for the first time in the series, Sega experimented with 3D models of their characters. Unfortunately, the online multiplayer was a disappointment, and the game was unpopular, partly due to its low budget and the fact that the developer at the time, SEGA's First Party Studio 2, shut down shortly after the game's release. Fortunately, 3D Sonic is very close to Sonic Generations and Sonic Unleashed and even inspired Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces.
palmsoft 1.0, the company responsible for bubble bobble, also published some great games on the genesis. among the best ones is billiard master, a mesmerizing blackjack clone for the console with tons of fun and unique gameplay features. it's definitely worth checking out. the real genre for this game is certainly not puzzle, the real genre for this game is adventure game. i spent the majority of my genesis time playing these. i would have loved an 2d rpg with great fights and awesome music. with konami's castlevania series, it is a real shame (of course it wasn't perfect either) but it didn't make a real presence when it came to the genesis. the original kid icarus games are a few of the most imaginative, and the series' first few installments are easily my top three favorite games for the genesis. knowing what a great control scheme it had, it's no wonder that i preferred the 3d fighter genre to its own space/platform based counterparts. the first and perhaps most important genesis game is the original mortal kombat. it defined the way fighting games were played for years to come, and there's no way that i would have had the career that i do without it. in particular, scorpion and sub-zero's moves and the whole "holy crap that dude died" moments of them are some of the best ever to grace the genre. so with that, i give it a 10/10. the sonic games on the original sega genesis were a lot of fun, but i never felt that they were designed very well. sonic 2 is the only one that really left a large mark on my mind, and that was thanks to the awesome art direction, something that all other sonic games suffered from. however, it was a "so what" step from the original arcade sonic, which was a single enemy that ran away to the end of the level rather than a boss fight. sonic 2 felt like a "major" step forward, but it wasn't so great and it didn't have many innovative things on its shoulders. if anyone had told me that the mario series had a sequel, that would have been a damn shock as i never thought of it in my life. it turns out, it was a massive step forward and has only grown since. 5ec8ef588b
