so, this being said, shall we quickly get down to the guts of the review. first, the acting. id say its on par with others like sarkar raj but it fails to entertain at a deeper level. its like writing a review of an item on amazon without actually buying it. its that good. there is no depth and therefore no resonance. it is like watching a david o russel film but with no depth. you wouldnt feel anything.
sarkar raj is a rags to riches story of a young boy from a poor family who struggles to make it big in life. the film captures the theme of mecca by making it the new location of the movie. one can see the locations of mumbai and then the locations of different parts of the world. it is a very patriotic film and the most obvious example of this is govinda singing national anthem. in fact, he sings the song after every scene and credits, and the song has a very indian feel to it. however, the director has failed to make the song feel more patriotic, and it is a big disappointment.
lets start by the most obvious. the plot is about a man who is of the same name as his father, who is also a cop. this is the first clue that this is not going to be a very good movie, and that something is wrong. but it gets worse. despite the fact that this is a remake of the movie the godfather, the plot of sarkar raj is almost identical. the difference is that its more bloated than the original, and that it is a bit more out of place. the story is basically about the struggles of a second generation cop (pranab biswas, the godfather, played by amitabh bachchan), a girl (veena malik, the godmother, played by aishwarya bachchan) who is his love interest, and a woman (bipasha basu, the godmother, played by aishwarya bachchan) who is the mother of his son. except the woman is not his wife but his mistress. not only is it a total copy, the character of the girl is totally the opposite of what happened in the original, and she is played by a completely different actress (veena malik is aishwarya). not to mention that the role of veena is completely different in the original. in the original she is a prostitute, in the remake she is an office worker. the director also failed to capture the spirit of the original, making the film too simple, and the characters are just not developed enough. characters like sollozzo and the don are just cardboard cutouts, with no expression. the godfather is not a copy of his father at all, but more of a caricature, and a travesty of the character of the original movie.
rgv is an antidemocratic, anticorrupt, anticorporate and antiexploitative cannibal, which is why his movies get such strong reactions. as an ideology, it can appeal to a number of different people. the politicians are the most vocal, but theres a lot of people who want to be victims of this system. they want someone to tell them what they can and can't do. they arent as bothered about the corrupt guys as they are about the corrupt system that allows them to get away with it. its easy to turn people against each other, and that makes it easier to control them. theres a whole lot of people who have seen rgvs movies who want to be taken on a journey to find answers about the world around them, and the only way they can do that is by taking on their own problems. the film makes the mistake of saying that the main theme of the film is its strong conflict. sarkar is a godfather who is good at everything, who tries to be good. he is a very powerful man. its on his son to convince him. it is the only part of the story which has any real conflict. but there is no twist and the climax is not interesting. it has a set pattern and the story could have been told in a more interesting manner. it does not let you get involved with the story, it just makes you think of it. the film is interesting for its political insights and its relevance to our industry. but the film does not prove that there is no corruption in our industry. its not a detective story. its a more intellectual story. but its not very interesting as a story. after the other two films, 'sarkar' is like giving the viewers the third degree, or a long survey on the matter that they are probably already well-informed about. what is it that 'sarkar' is trying to say? what is the message it is trying to convey? or is it just like the first two films, an extended one-man show with extra-ordinary script by rgv? there is no other film in recent times that has tried to tell the viewer about the method of the rule. in 'sarkar', the rule is captured to a t. there is no doubt, no ambiguity, no problem, no question. it will be interesting to know if this film will come up in the top-20 list of all time. 5ec8ef588b
