In 1975 there were major disturbances in northwest Bengal and Dhaka because of a shortage of rice in those parts. As a result of this situation and the successive military operations, many old women hid their crops and received no food for about 2 years. The crisis of 1989 led to an increase of the number of hill people in the plains. Those who werent interested in joining the armed groups lived on their own and had to take no part in any negotiations for self-determination. This caused a resurgence of tensions between ethnic groups.
But gradually the city was drowning in the sea of violence, in the face of extreme poverty, the rich fled to the hills, the middle class stayed away and the West moved towards Dhaka to eat and drink.
The situation was a nightmare for the locals who were forced to stay back and continued to starve. Slavery had gripped the country in the name of development and the people were not allowed to express their feelings of disgust. The army looted and burned the Dhaka region which added to the anger in the people. The government enforced martial law for the last 3 years of the conflict. The Sheikh Mujib government did not deserve the support of the people.
Chittagong fell more or less at the same time as Dhaka. I did not know the exact date, but it fell within a couple of days of Dhaka. The Indian Army was there first and declared a 'victory'. They had moved quickly and used tanks. They spent almost a week scouring the jungles of Chittagong, where they killed thousands of Bengalis (probably a large majority of the killings are of peasants) mostly for alleged ISI connections. ( see the Gutenberg link ). I saw the wreckage of tanks and guns, aircraft and trucks, in the jungles. One of the policemen who went to Chittagong, told me there were burnt bodies everywhere.
