in all the things in life, good and bad are always part and parcel, the only thing that distinguishes between good and bad things is the will of the individual. if there is will, with the help of good ideas, an individual can achieve success, wealth and happiness. some succeed and some are unsuccessful. what is important is that the whole nation should be successful so as to contribute to creating a great nigeria. the commonest problem of the nigerian education system is dilution of the fundamental knowledge, most importantly, the english language. in this paper, the development of my interest in becoming a teacher was described. the reaction of my teachers and my father to my academic interest was also described. finally, some points of concern and criticisms on my effort to be a successful teacher were put forth.
the nigerian university system aims at producing comprehensive persons, as set forth in the recent university deans summit talk. the needs of the country for such people, as dr. justice kabir mohammed stated, are so great that nigeria needs a large number of university graduates to meet them. until then, there will be an over supply of graduates, who, despite being well educated, are not able to utilize their academic knowledge in the exercise of responsibility. this is a legitimate concern of our government. this paper explored the problems faced by young graduates and the solutions to it. the paper relied heavily on the case study of a young nigerian student named kolibola. a case study design was adopted. interviews, questionnaire survey and an online search were used for data collection. the data was analysed through descriptive and analytical analysis. the conclusion of the study was that the social and economic factors in our environments have seriously eroded the effectiveness of the higher education system and has deprived most of its potential beneficiaries. the only solution we have so far, is an increase in our higher education funding and a reduction of its cost of living.
