healing cycles were also performed for the crack-width test set-up. the crack-width was monitored by a video camera during the unloading step of the maximum load (160n). the crack closure for the first crack healing is shown in fig. 7. after 10-15% of the crack-gap closure, the crack was made to close further (about 10%). the most important observation is that it appears that the crack closure due to healing is not a straight crack closure, but rather an oscillating, zig-zag closure. the crack closure is also faster than for the previous crack healing, i.e. the cracked sample with a crack-gap of 2.7mm was closed to 1.5mm after only 3h healing time at 1473k.
the ti2alc max-phase metallo-ceramic possesses excellent properties compared to human compact bone. the excellent fracture toughness and the self-healing capability makes it suitable as a potential biomaterial for load-bearing implants. for this purpose, the ti2alc max-phase metallo-ceramic should be as tough as possible, i.e. fracture resistance should be maximized for a given loading-unloading cycle. in order to achieve an optimal balance between fracture toughness and toughness recovery, it is important to keep the crack length as short as possible during the healing cycles in order to avoid the loss of the fracture resistance.
in the present study, the crack healing ability of a max phase ceramic (ti2alc) with a hexagonal crystal structure was studied in situ, using a custom-built wst specimen design. the experimental set up is shown in fig. 1 b,c and is also described in the supplementary information.
the wst sample was heated to 1473k and cooled down to rt. the obtained force-cmod curve is similar to that in fig. 1 a. this means that no change of the healing product occurred at the investigated temperature of 1473k. further, no full recovery of the fracture toughness was achieved after healing. the fracture toughness was reduced from 6.9 to 1.3mpa m1/2. after the first crack healing, the samples were placed in the furnace again and new healing cycles were performed at 1473k for up to 5 healing cycles. a different healing regime was applied for each healing cycle: firstly, a healing time of 4h (indicated by the shaded area) and secondly, an additional 2h of furnace operation followed by an acoustical emission test during unloading. the force versus cmod curves are shown in fig. 5. the force versus cmod curves for the virgin and first-healed samples are also shown in fig. 5, whereas the force versus cmod curves for the repeated healing cycles are also shown in fig. 6. the first crack healing (first cycle) with 4h duration led to only a slight increase in the loading force to 160n, whereas a much higher load of 180n was needed for the first crack re-healing at the second and further crack healing cycles. also, the first-healed samples showed the higher cmod values at the higher loading forces. this indicates that the first crack healing had changed the fracture resistance of the chevron notch to a degree that is high enough to compensate for the fracture resistance loss observed for virgin ti2alc in fig. 4 a,c,e. in contrast, the repeated crack healings did not lead to an improved fracture resistance, but rather to a decrease in fracture resistance. the same was observed for repeated crack healings at a constant loading time of 4h each. note, that there is no direct relationship between the force and cmod values and the healing time (indicated by the shaded area). 5ec8ef588b
