'sugandha' (sonal chauhan) is beautiful beyond words, but varma is infuriated at the treatment meted out to sugandha by the colonel - it is as if, in his mind, she has been given a striptease. if the colonel does not fall in love with her as a painting, he certainly falls in love with her as a flesh-and-blood creature.
while raja ravi varma describes his process of creation in a sketchbook, the colonel repeatedly pops up to make suggestions and criticisms. by the time the work is in its final stages, he explains to the artist that he is not captivated by his work but is enraptured by a young woman of his acquaintance named sugandha, who has done no more than utter a few lines of a poem.
it also depicts the importance of gender when it comes to the movement of ideas. a cursory history will tell you that before the bengali movement, indian men were culturally agnostic and women were subjugated by gender. the bengali movement restored women's rights but at the cost of men's cultural rights. thus, the state of aseeman nandy, who is the male voice of the film, by his unacceptance of feminism is not a bad reflection of the intellectual hegemony and the unthinking male chauvinism that pervades india.
although the work thus speaks about patriarchy and the challenge of women's empowerment, it has also been purposely constructed to remind of a woman's power of transformation by investing charisma on a man. the torch of intellectual life is passed on to this man as a challenge to all men, a move to show that even in the middle of the 19th century, the british moguls did not have the control on our minds. with this, not only does the film probe into the indian psyche, but also shows the british legacy on our psyche as not only was there cultural domination, but also intellectual dominance.

(when on the streets of bombay and a rich lady spots him, she invites him to her house; but he turns down her offer by pointing out that he is a married man, but she is not, and points out that all this is a facade, a falsehood, while in reality the opposite is true.) he has worked with another painter, l.v. mehendale, and they are both not allowed to rent a house anywhere in india.
