ok, so now that we've established that character is a targeted eq, i'll move on to the other claim made for it, namely that it can'make vocals sound like they were recorded at a live concert'. we'll have a look at that in a little more detail, firstly though i want to look at the more prosaic and less interesting aspects of character's processing. the main new thing about character is that it can add eq, but i already have a perfectly good software equaliser on my system, so that's not going to help me. what's more character's only real justification is that it can boost frequencies with less latency and distortion than my usual equaliser. so let's take a look at the latency figures.
i'm already familiar with character's parameter settings from the old powercore version and this is the easiest to use. the first two parameters are called 'boost' and 'tweak', which i assume will refer to their respective function. i've already experimented with boost to see how it affects bass and treble without any processing. i've seen a noticeable improvement when boosting the bass but the treble doesn't seem to change much. i'm not sure if this is a problem with my system or the plugin, so i'll be using boost as a baseline for all my experiments in this review.
the next two parameters are fairly self-explanatory - 'q' controls the character's q factor and 'gate' sets the crossfade. these are probably the parameters i'm most likely to tweak, but i'll be using the defaults for the rest of the review. i'm not a huge fan of crossfades on vocals, so i'm not going to look at this too closely.
