In this chapter, you see how to use many of Photoshop's major editing tools for creating and modifying images. You also get to know the popular selection, healing, and clone tools, which enable you to edit the way images look and the color of objects in an image. The following sections are where you find detailed information on the tools and features that you use to create and alter images in Photoshop. I cover layers, points of interest, and the different drawing tools in depth. I discuss the selection, healing, and clone tools, and show you where to go for more info on how to use these tools, as well. Fortunately, the keyboard shortcuts are the same for most commands, and I explain all the most frequently used commands and shortcuts for you. I also take the opportunity to review some of the alternatives to Photoshop for more affordable options that work very well, so you'll know you can do at least some of what Photoshop does. (If you're using Photoshop Elements or any other product that's more beginner friendly, you can skip these sections and move directly to the Applications section of this book.) Navigating Photoshop Photoshop's interface is based on a system of overlapping windows. Figure 2-1 illustrates a view of the interface, and I highlight each major area of importance in the upcoming sections that follow. **Figure 2-1:** Learn how to navigate Photoshop's many windows and controls. Making your way around Photoshop is fairly straightforward. You can start in the left pane (see Figure 2-1) and move to any of the toolbars shown, or you can search for the objects you want using the Search box at the top-right corner of the window. The Layers panel (see Figure 2-2) is at the far left of the window. Think of this panel as a folder where you can organize and work with your layers. This panel is divided into six panels, with separate tabs that you can click to hide or show different panels that are related to those tabs. The present invention relates to image display devices, and more particularly to a head-mounted image display device which allows observation of an image formed by an image generator disposed in a case and reflected by a half mirror as well as observation of an image formed by an image display element, like the image display device as described in the Japanese Patent Laid-open Publication No. 4-286170. In an image display device disclosed in the Japanese Patent Laid-open Publication No. 4-286170, a face-image generator for forming a face image formed from optical signals indicative of an image from a face of an observer, reflecting mirrors disposed on both sides of the face-image generator, and an image display element for displaying an image and its back ground are arranged within a case. An image is thus reflected by the reflecting mirrors and is converted into an image in the same size as the image display element. The image is then displayed on a half mirror to allow observation of the image which is reflected by the half mirror. With the image display device as disclosed in the above-mentioned reference, however, observation of an image, which is formed in an image display element and is then reflected by the half mirror, and observation of a face image formed in the face-image generator are independent of each other. That is, the observer can only observe one image formed by the image display element at a time. Thus, in the case where a plurality of images are intended to be displayed at the same time, a plurality of image display devices which correspond to the respective images are necessary for allowing simultaneous observation of the plurality of images. This means an increased number of the image display devices to be used. This results in an increased size of the image display device, and accordingly, an increased size of an apparatus using the image display device. Q: Is it possible to have two mixed bit-depth files converted to uint32_t array? I am receiving two files in a mixed-depth format (unsigned int8/unsigned int16) and I want to create a uint32_t array from those two files without loosing all the data. I have tried with a char[2][128] array where first index is unsigned int8 and second is unsigned int16 but due to the conversion it gets truncated (a uint8 index ends up with a uint8 and a uint16 index ends up with a uint16). A: Edit: I would guess (and this is just a guess) that "mixed-depth" is a not so uncommon term for "interleaved arrays".
