While AI photomanipulation and HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing is a fun idea, it’s rather slow in how it actually works. Likewise, Adobe’s terrific new tool, Content-Aware Fill, is an interesting feature but one that many users will never bother with (it usually replaces a white space or a blemish in a small area of an image that doesn’t look like it’s important, often replacing it with a uniform tone or color). AI functionality is certainly impressive, and it’s worth experimenting with, but it’s still a work in progress.
Of course, any number of other low-level features are quite nice—color spaces and channels, ICC profiling, layer styles (B&W, color, and the like) can all be manipulated on top of everything else, and it’s all extremely easy.
A lot of the new features are there just for show and don’t really improve the overall experience significantly. That’s the danger of doing it the way Adobe has, though—it can be a bit of a fad as people look to copy the new features, and the overall user experience is fragmenting. Does anyone really need to use the new HDR Tone Mapping feature? Not really—less so than when they first released it. It’s an interesting gimmick, but it doesn’t always do the best of anything, and it’s not required at all for any high-end work.
For those purists or who are otherwise looking for the very best quality work, though, Photoshop is still the best option. It’s not a complete solution, but it’s a great Photoshop, and if you do want to get into AI and beyond, a complete suite of software is the best route.
