the question arises: why was cannabis so successful? why did it make such an impact upon the united states, whereas it never had a comparable impact on other countries? the answer is simple. in the united states, most drugs can be used legally. this is not true in other countries. in most of the world, cannabis is not legal, and therefore, it cannot become a competitor of alcohol or tobacco. the cannabis plant is very different from the opium poppy plant. cannabis needs to be processed before it can be made into a drug. many people believe that cannabis is a dangerous drug. others, however, believe that cannabis is a drug that should be used in moderation. the us government does not make any effort to educate the public about cannabis. on the other hand, it is legal to smoke cannabis in many european countries. in the united states, people are told that cannabis will cause cancer. the attitude in europe is that cannabis is a harmless drug, and that the only harm is that it makes the user appear stupid. it is clear that the us government has been successful in keeping cannabis out of the mainstream of us society. why has the us government failed to keep opium out of the mainstream of us society?
