This provides the basis for a possible interpretation of many of Nostradamus' more fabulous predictions, but it is somewhat unsatisfactory, as "the most important" of his many complex prophecies would thus be reduced to the status of something like a personal taste, with no explanation of why, for example, they should be believed. It also involves him as a kind of occasional apocalyptic novelist writing short stories, for in his Centuries in particular, he would seem to be describing the world as it were through the eyes of someone on the verge of madness, oblivious of the near future. Indeed, the Centuries are often very disturbing and opaque and seem at times to be satirical, but in many cases sound quite rational and consist of the kind of ordered and carefully constructed speculation, which persisted in the centuries that followed. It is worth mentioning that the two 1555 volumes of translated material were published in Lyon, and his Centuries in a different edition, which followed the plan of his discourses and was without prolixity, were issued in 1562. Thus it may be presumed that the Centuries was written after that edition and not in 1555, but before the ultimate posthumous Century of 1557. The Centuries were not published until 1555, but the first two, Antichrist and The French King, were typeset in August 1550, with the third, Divine Week, following in January 1551. [1] However, the 1556 edition of Nostradamus' Centuries was an entirely different work from the one in which the Centuries was based. Further books (mainly Centuries editions in 1552, 1554 and 1555) followed in 1559, 1561, 1563, 1564, 1566, 1567, 1569, 1571, 1575, 1576, 1577, and 1578. These rarely strayed from the same structure as his Centuries proper, and indeed often seemed to be continuations of, and to have copied, them. This was not the case, however, with the posthumous 1557 and 1558 Centuries [1] which went back to the Centuries (and Centuries Quartets) structure. And even the Centuries of 1570 to 1575 seem to have been continuing the same structure and have the same order of the final three Centuries as the 1557 and 1558 Centuries. While it is sometimes supposed that Nostradamus was the product of a unique imagination, it would appear that he was a highly intelligent and perceptive man who kept abreast of the times, although this was not said in his own day. He may have suffered from a guilty conscience, however, because some of his prophecies relating to France were proved false.
Whatever the case, the Prophecies appear to have gained widespread popularity in the decades following his death. One of the earliest printed editions was the Trentes et quarante preuves de Nostradamus (1572) edited by Thomas Corderius, a Protestant theologian from Regensburg (see also Sources), with a laudatory preface by Erasmus. This edition (reprinted in 1856) contains the Preuves de Nostre Dame, which was probably the result of extensive revision by a priest, Olivier de la Ville, with permission from Nostradamus' widow (see Sources). A reprint of this appeared in 1956, using modern English translation, spelling and punctuation, with the title The Starry Messenger, but this was subsequently withdrawn. In 1572 another Protestant, Philip Lemnius, edited and printed a volume of the Predictions in two parts. This comprised 252 verses (numbered ipsissima verba), which were divided into four categories, of prophecies on great events of the past, coming or recent past, present and future, respectively. (The last category was translated into German.) Longe verse 133, on the pia Appella, was not translated, as it differed from other pia Appella. This was a deliberate departure from the earlier edition of 1572 and was intended to show that the pia Appella was simply a translation, not one of Nostradamus' own words. Longe verse 133 [2] was also translated for inclusion in the Spes Mala (1573). The Predictions continued to increase in popularity and were frequently reprinted, notably by Thomas Hoccleve in 1589. The Spes Mala was re-issued in 1571 (see Sources) and Hoccleve's translation was published in 1589. In 1591, Thomas Norton edited a version of it in two books, with smaller numbers of verses. A French version, containing translations of the same pia Appella into French, appeared in 1592, with the addition of other possible predictions for the time of publication, including the decisive European battle between France and the Holy Roman Empire which opened the long series of wars known as the Thirty Years' War. 5ec8ef588b
