the white shark is, surprisingly, the most resilient shark out there. it can live off the land most of the year, and can swim just about anywhere. it's much harder to catch it than you'd think. long line fishing for white sharks is actually anti-sport. you have to travel far out to sea and then walk back into the boat, quickly running the risk of getting on shore. you have to be in a boat with a fast moving engine. you have to run the risk of getting a tagfish caught in one of the hooks. and you have to listen for the large, bulk-sounding fish passing by.
last year, i went out with a new south wales department of primary industries (dpi) biologist to look for white sharks, see if we could catch them and observe them up close. this was before all the public panic about them and their reputation as a danger to swimmers. "we're only going out two-and-a-half hours" she told me.
this whale shark is about 12 metres long. if it was in a port jackson estuary, it would have been hard to catch. but it was in a river. the dpi biologist taught me how to snare a whale shark, and we soon got one to the boat.
i was hoping we'd catch a second one. but as the boat took off, we saw a white shark. i waited a few minutes for him to get a good look at us before he turned away, then jogged up the back of the boat. i jumped in as the whale shark was still swimming backwards. after five minutes, i hoisted the whale shark up out of the water and clipped him to the back of the boat.
the editing for the remus film is well underway. the ciné film depicts an old miami beach where a baby great white was washed up dead. this is followed by a series of human-transported great whites, gaining strength before their “rise” into the open sea. each instance is followed by the shark’s eventual demise in a human’s net. the film closes with a punch line: “this is the third great white ever to be observed in the open ocean. the first, of course, was in africa. the second was in south florida. the third is remus.”
