Things like women's suffrage and the abolition of slavery were introduced to the country, however, many of the reforms were also rejected by the conservative Shogun and other upper class Japanese.
First impressions of being in Tokyo and seeing the surroundings are disorienting. The day I visited, it looked quite cold and gray. It wasn’t raining, but the clouds were so low and the buildings so tall that it felt like a damper-down kind of day. Something felt off. But then I went to a shop, opened the door to the corridor where I thought I’d see a ghost. A very annoyed ghost. Yeah, Tokyo-Kai is probably not recommended for those of us with weak constitutions. But if you live in Japan, you’ll probably be there in the fall anyway. And if you’re looking to have a very good time, forget walking around in the throngs of people and head to a karaoke bar. It’s funny, really. Just a different sort of thing than it was when you arrived in Tokyo. Had the script been any good, I probably would have liked this anime. You see, Meiji Tokyo Renka is about a young woman who can see ghosts. The ghosts comment about it, and she passes it off as being just a knack. But a new ghost girl tries to warn her to get out of the country, because whatever is going to happen at Meiji is going to start there. Like the anime, the ghosts (from the eight main stories) are kind of dim, and the reason they’re different colors (blue, red, yellow and so on) isn’t explained. (Also, I had to look up what color a phantom was. It’s what I thought. Green-ish? Dunno.) One of the main draws of the movie is its anime-style production. The movie is animated in the style of a visual novel, in which viewers interact directly with the characters. The results are compelling, and they give viewers a perspective they'd never have seen in a traditional television production, which is more static and simplistic.
