the aggressive shark dive is not too safe. like human divers, sharks are erratic swimmers. they move in quick pursuit of prey and travel in big groups. sharks can swim quickly and change direction unexpectedly, usually at high speed. meanwhile their prey may be moving much more slowly and seemingly directionless. if the prey diver is chased by a shark, it’ll probably gain on the prey. if the prey diver moves toward the shark it can get away. the best way to control sharks is to stay calm, remain still and just do what the shark does: go straight at it. you may have to move gradually as the shark approaches, but if you can do this without panic the shark will likely lose interest. remember, sharks are curious and go where there’s food and water. stay calm and let the shark swim past. tell your dive buddies where you’re headed, and one of them will follow the shark in case it turns around.
sharks lack eyes, and are blind to most of what is going on around them. they use their snouts to detect prey, or any other surface disturbance such as a boat, and can sense moving objects when the surface is broken. they are sensitive to their water and can sense temperature gradients and, if alarmed, will respond accordingly, which means diving shark populations move with changing ocean conditions. they are also very efficient predators, and can eat a mouthful of prey every 15 to 20 seconds. sharks have surprisingly large braincases and powerful jaws. using their eyeballs is not a good idea. like humans, they turn their eyes in only so many directions. they can turn their heads for a wider view, and can rotate their heads from side to side. but they’re not able to rotate their heads completely around. because of this, sharks can only see a limited view in any direction. still, sharks often can detect changes in colour and movement from only half a metre away.
