Two years after her fathers passing, Alithea moves to the Australian desert, where she tries to live on her own. But she becomes so lonely and ravenous that she makes a deal with a rogue road warrior named Immortan Joe who arranges to take her to a secret road where only the fittest of the fittest live. Strangely enough, this doesnt stop him from sexually assaulting her, but it stops him from eating her. Joe is played by a heart-stoppingly handsome, younger-than-his-age Tom Hardy. Alithea and Hardy seem to possess some electricity, regardless of the convention that says age equals gravity. After a period of adjustment, Alithea learns to live with the desert, and begins to live without Joe.
The brutality of the Mad Max series is what makes it so riveting. You expect it out of 300, for instance, but not out of The Hunger Games, which owes more to the confines of a well-written childrens book than to Blaxploitation, bloody or otherwise. Fury Road taps into the same dark, canny humor that laces the Conan films, and one might even call the film a cross between The Road Warrior and Battleship. (And lest you think the filmmakers have become effete and politically correct, set your inhibitions aside: There are some robust sound effects and a huge explosion).
In the film, we cant shake the idea of Alithea being a prisoner who is finally free. But as her journey back home continues, it becomes clear that no one is keeping her where she is. Alithea is not a prisoner of the Systems Army, nor is she a prisoner of the desert. She is free, and she gets to keep going. Millers screenplay is based on a graphic novel titled The Road to Australias Secret, by Max Pinckers creator, George Miller. See if you can spot it in the cleverly adapted screenplay, which veers between realistic and non-realistic modes, and if you can, determine which is which, or if you cant quite decide.
