in this chapter, the authors present a method for automated design of a new smaller synchronous digital circuit from an existing one. the method is based on the idea of code reuse, where a sub-design of a circuit is defined to be a cell, and a larger design is made of multiple cells. a new, smaller design of a synchronous digital circuit is obtained by combining two or more cells from a preexisting design, where the cells are selected to have the same combinational functions.
in this chapter, the authors present a method for speeding up the design of synchronous digital circuits. the method is based on the idea of constructing a hierarchy of circuits from which a particular circuit can be selected based on user's specification of the number of clock cycles it will consume. for each level in the hierarchy, a circuit is constructed that consumes as few clock cycles as possible. the circuit is usually selected from the last level in the hierarchy, but it can also be selected from a level earlier in the hierarchy, if the user has a preference for selecting a circuit from a lower level in the hierarchy.

the structural and functional diversity of vertebrate and invertebrate nervous systems is unquestionably the most fundamental difference between the two. despite this, there is evidence of extensive homology between the two systems. both vertebrate and invertebrate nervous systems share the molecular machinery of neurotransmitter release, both use nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nachrs) and glycine receptors (glyrs), and invertebrates also use glutamate receptors (glurs). the most striking homology between vertebrate and invertebrate nervous systems is found in the molecular machinery of signal transmission, and even more so at the level of single neurons. both vertebrate and invertebrate nervous systems are composed of specialized neurons, each of which can be identified based on its morphology, electrophysiological characteristics, and connectivity. the anatomical and physiological similarities between invertebrate and vertebrate nervous systems have led some to speculate that the basic principles of nervous system function are conserved across animal species. over the past decade, many of these principles have been elucidated in the study of the worm caenorhabditis elegans. this remarkable animal has been used to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of neurotransmission, axonal transport, and synaptic plasticity. in this paper, we review some of the key studies that have led to these advances and discuss the future of invertebrate systems in the study of vertebrate nervous system function..
