UNC Charlotte allows for infectious laboratory waste. The infectious waste containers are allowed to be labeled with a biohazard symbol and placed in the designated yellow containers. The biohazard symbol represents the waste as hazardous, therefore special treatment (decontamination) must be performed before being discarded into any landfill.

All UNC-CH student and research student laboratory waste must be labeled with the biohazard warning symbol indicated here (e.g., x). When possible, work with full sized commercial labeling and labeling that includes details and precautions for safe handling. If your labels are not large enough, please share detailed information about each experiment in your laboratory plan (or other laboratory documents) which describes your work with appropriate wording that specifies where and how biohazardous materials are created or stored in the lab. Labeling must be completed on all biohazard waste before it is removed from the lab. All hazardous chemical and radiochemical reagents must be boxed and labeled accordingly. Please note that the labeling does not need to be anywhere near as large or detailed as the above, but must include the biohazard warning symbol and two lines of text indicating the contents of the container and location of the container, as shown in the chart below.

At UNCG there are facilities for the above mentioned type of wastes. UNCG allows for these wastes to be disposed of within the General Toxicology Disposal Facility. So they go through a similar process but it is not in house. You have to contact the onsite facility if you want to get rid of waste you must have biohazard on it. The standard procedure is to sanitize the waste and then flush it down the sink but you don't sanitize it and throw it out, you should just flush it.
