Edassery Govindan Nair, another great literary figure, tries to gaze into the future of the river in his famous poemKuttippuram Palam (Kuttippuram Bridge). He wrote the poem in 1963 when the bridge was built. The poet foresaw the sandmining and industrial pollution awaiting the Nila. O Mother, Perar [another name for the Nila] will you but transform into a grieving gutter?," he laments. He describes the seasonal floods thus: "...Again, you will surge forward and crash across, destroying banks..."
Govindan Nair lived in the Avudaiyar area of the village. Farmlands surrounded the Nila. Palam, though, stands as a symbol of the independence-the Nila flows in full volume, serving as a metropolis in itself, even as the Pandiya kingdom established for the first time. It is this that provides an interpretation of the poem, for apart from the Nila, the clearest proof of time is the seasons. The poet described the Nila as a great mother, the land. If the land is full, if the crops are heavy and abundant, even if the water is heavy, the river will bless this land in many ways. The river runs into the sea once a year, bringing life and beauty to the land. It also, sometimes, weds the land to the sea, submerging all but its highest peaks. It performs a similar function for every land. It overheats, and wets, if it is to have a larger volume of flow. And if the flow is not large, it becomes stagnant. It does not go back to the sea as it did and as it will do in the future because it is made of the rocks that lie upto a few kilometres away, rocks similar to the rocks of which the bridge itself is built. When the river meets the main, the erosion starts. The land begins to wither away, or the river, bringing with it silt to cover the ground, begins to drop its banks. So, with the clear¹ stream of hope, Govindan Nair asked the mother if the figure of the Nila, which has become a habit, would change again into a grieving gutter.
