the present paper reports on an experiment on the propagation of shear waves in the boundary layer between the liquid and solid phases of a glass plate. the effects of the plate thickness and the velocity of the liquid on the characteristics of the waves are examined. the observed results are consistent with the theory.

theory and experiments show that longitudinal waves in an elastic medium with poissons ratio are compressional waves, and those with are shear waves. these rules are extended to the deformation waves in an elastic solid.

the physical properties of elastic wave propagation in solids and liquids have been investigated in the past, but only few studies have been made on the aspects of the wave propagation that relate to the design and technology of structures. as the elastic wave in a solid medium can be considered as the elastic deformation propagating at the same speed as the original, stress or strain rate, this study investigates the principal wave properties of the wave propagation in terms of the design and technology of the structures. the wave propagation is also studied from the viewpoint of a rather new application, as the elastic wave propagation has been applied to the evaluation of the structural safety of structures.

the present paper introduces a new technique which combines rotation disk and traditional kolsky bar (often termed as split-hopkinson bar). this technique can be employed to study the tension stress-strain relations and tension-unloading-tension strain-rate history effects of materials in the strain rate range from 102103s1. the rise time of the incident wave is as short as 15 s because of the particular design. an attempt is made to estimate strain error caused by the thread connection between the specimen and the bars, and stress error due to the mismatch of the cross section of the specimen and bars. a short rise-time incident wave appears to be most advantageous in view of maintaining the accuracy of the stress-strain curve obtained near the initiation. preliminary tests are performed on the instrument. comments are made for this design configuration. this paper presents the first experimental results on stress waves propagating in liquids. we have studied the dispersion and attenuation of these waves in a fluid and have examined their characteristic properties. the wave pulses were generated using a vibrational source and were measured with a high-speed digital oscilloscope. measurements of the waves through a glass tube indicate that they show the well-known dispersion relation for waves propagating in a non-viscous fluid. the attenuation of the wave pulses is also studied. a decay in the amplitude of the wave pulses of nearly 100% is observed after the passage of the pulse through a distance of 12 cm. this decay can be attributed to the attenuation of the wave pulse and also to the dissipation of acoustic energy by various mechanisms, such as the breakdown of the acoustic fluid. 5ec8ef588b
