Version 1.1.0 was released on 19 April 2016. It added the ability to stop and restart an engine in-flight, allowing for engine shutdowns to refuel and repair the engine. It also added manual fuel injection, allowing players to add fuel into the engine's combustion chamber manually, as well as a more advanced frame of reference to orient the Kerbals on the ground, by putting a wheel on the frame. The Kerbals can now equip wheels and landing gear, simplifying the Kerbals' basic construction and making the Kerbals' natural mechanics much more evident. Version 1.1 also introduced new Kerbals including rocket scientists, cartographers, and engineers. An appropriate Kerbal engineer could repair Kerbals in flight. There were also science Kerbals, anthropologists, and anthropomorphologists. More powerful science Kerbals could build more science Kerbals, an AI Kerbal personality, and new variants of the Kerbal. While the game's physics engine was being revamped and improved in version 1.1, Squad rebuilt much of the game around it, including rendering, animation, and much more. A beta was launched on 21 June 2016 which lasted until 18 July. Several bugs were fixed and further refinements done to the physics engine. A commercial release version of 1.1 for Windows, macOS, and Linux was launched on 19 December 2016. The Linux version was also available for purchase on Steam.[29]
Version 1.2 was released on October 17, 2016. It added telemetry for Kerbals, allowing them to have a closer look at each other and see what they can do. It also redesigned Kerbus, a taxi vehicle that allows Kerbals to move between bases and launchpads. 1.2 also introduced X-Plane, which allows Kerbals to explore planets in outer space, analyzing, mapping, and mining resources in 3D.[30] Version 1.3, nicknamed Catching Up, was released on December 2, 2016. In addition to telemetry, 1.3 added the ability to manually launch and land a rocket using a hand controller.[31] It could also deploy the Kerbals on the Martian surface to set up a base and mine resources from the ground.
