the focus of the paper is on the democratization of entrepreneurship. the notion of the democratization of entrepreneurship is not a new one, but the current covid-19 crisis has brought to the fore the discussion about the democratization of entrepreneurship. the democratization of entrepreneurship has been discussed since at least the 1950s and 1960s. the democratization of entrepreneurship is not a phenomenon that simply started in the past decade or two. the reality is that there has been a gradual democratization of entrepreneurship over the decades.
the entrepreneurial revolution brought about by the industrial revolution has transformed the world into a global market, whereas in the past, global markets were driven and driven by local communities. thus, a world without entrepreneurship is a world without markets. market and entrepreneurship are inseparable, and hence, understanding entrepreneurship is vital to understanding markets (mills, 2020 ).
i propose a different way to discuss entrepreneurship that begins with a focus on the big picture of the economic world, not the small picture of a particular firm. as a result, a theoretical model is presented that takes into account many of the concerns that have emerged in the past decade about entrepreneurship, the economy, and markets.
the model presented can serve as a framework that is useful to both the academic researcher and entrepreneurs themselves. it may also help to inform policy, particularly with regard to the different types of entrepreneurship, as well as how entrepreneurship is viewed and what it means to the economy. this model can be used to define what is meant by entrepreneurship and more importantly, how entrepreneurship should be studied. this model can be used to promote entrepreneurship by (a) creating conditions for entrepreneurialism to flourish and (b) use this model to guide empirical research on entrepreneurship. this model may also be used to shape the content of entrepreneurship education and provide the basis for entrepreneurialism in schools. thus, the purpose of the model presented is not to offer a comprehensive picture of all aspects of entrepreneurship, but rather to serve as a starting point for discussion and debate.
through the lens of democratization, we ask the question: why does the public sector need to be an entrepreneurial ecosystem rather than an enabling environment? in other words, as the drive towards the democratization of entrepreneurship sweeps the world, where will the public sector fit in the equation? in addition, what does this have to do with the threat to democracy and entrepreneurship in the face of the covid-19 pandemic? we will answer these questions in the next section. as stated above, entrepreneurship has a broad base of political and social implications and ramifications. therefore, it is important for entrepreneurship scholars to be able to communicate their findings to the world at large in order to ensure that policy makers are aware of the growing trend towards the democratization of entrepreneurship. in this article, we do that by analyzing the trend towards greater democratization of entrepreneurship. in addition to the above-mentioned, we also look at the current pandemic as a catalyst for democracy and entrepreneurship. we argue that the centralization of the technology industry and the focused attention of the media on the few technology giants has not created a positive environment for the democratization of entrepreneurship. on the other hand, the democratization of entrepreneurship has been the direct result of the covid-19 pandemic because it has allowed the multitude of organizations that are involved in entrepreneurship to spread the message of entrepreneurship. we argue that these organizations, through the media, use the power of the pandaemic to raise awareness, to inform, and to teach about entrepreneurship. 5ec8ef588b
