Mary V. McQueen Mary V. McQueen (April 22, 1868 – February 23, 1953) was an American suffragist and temperance worker. Biography Mary Victoria McQueen was born April 22, 1868, in Piqua, Ohio. She was the first of 11 children born to Charles McQueen and Mary (Young) McQueen. Her father was a teacher who headed the history department at Miami University. In 1884 Mary McQueen traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee, to attend the Women's Temperance University. Later that year she went to England to study in the home of her uncle, Alexander Young, the celebrated author. Mary McQueen's mother died when Mary was eight years old. She was raised by her father and a family friend, W.H. Holbrook. Mary McQueen attended Miami University from 1889 to 1891, where she was the secretary of the Literary Society, and graduated from the Miami School of Cooking. Following her graduation, McQueen went on to work for a daguerreotype studio while continuing her studies in cooking. By 1896, she was married to Albert McQueen, a dentist. She and Albert had four children, two girls and two boys. In 1900, the family moved to the home and studio of Albert's brother Charles, where she and her husband practiced dentistry together. McQueen actively participated in the temperance movement, which originated with the women's rights movement of the late 1800s. In 1896, she was elected as the secretary of the Women's Bureau of the Women's Crusade of the American Union Against Intemperance. In that role, McQueen organized a listening committee in Toledo, Ohio, which issued a call for temperance fairs across the country. The National Colored Women's Council was also formed in Toledo, and McQueen was elected the group's secretary. Political activities In 1911, McQueen was appointed Secretary of the Federation of Women's Clubs, a national organization of women's clubs. In 1914, she was elected President of the Women's Christian Temperance Union's national headquarters at Topeka, Kansas. McQueen organized the prohibition clubs, where women worked to recruit, educate, and mobilize support for the temperance movement. She also assisted in the prohibition movement's work in four states: Tennessee, North Carolina, California, and Alabama. In 1922, McQueen became the first president of the Women's International Temperance Union. The
