There is, however, a long list of things that could have been better. Lightroom was released a few years ago in 2010, and its basic functionality has not changed a great deal since then. While Lightroom 5 has added a few useful and welcome new features, many of the old ones have still not been redesigned or reimagined. I have been repeatedly calling for this for the past few years and in many cases welcomed the feature updates and improvements, but much of what Lightroom does today feels like an unfortunate throwback from a time when web browsers were 5 years old. New features like layers and masks also seem to bear significant resemblance to the old Photoshop, which we know is now being phased out. And while it’s easy for me to criticize software for being outdated and a reminder of a time when blog and Facebook were in their infancy, perhaps the important thing here is that this is not a new, unfamiliar version of a tool we are already familiar with. The old one is not competing with anything at the moment, but it now feels quite obviously out of sync with the professional world of the Digital Photography world.
A very common complaint I read about Lightroom is that it is too complicated, even overly so. Well, that is definitely true. It’s a pretty difficult piece of software, and unless you’re a seasoned digital photographer, it may feel like more of a gymnastic feat than a genuinely useful tool.
This can’t be a problem, really, as Lightroom is a tool for a photographer, after all. The app just wants to make your life easier, while making sure you don’t fall into a steep learning curve. I am more than willing to overcome the learning curve. After all, it’s about time. If I spend most of my time scratching my head trying to understand new features and being frustrated by bugs, how can I be fully focused on my photography or my web browsing? Lightroom should allow me to work and have fun at the same time, not just clutter my workflow with frustrating complexities.
