* _Learning_ Photoshop includes elements of light and color theory and how to use special effects to achieve dreamy results. Photoshop also teaches you about layers, which is essential for creating complex images. If you're a true beginner, I recommend that you invest in the boxed set _Official Photoshop For Dummies_ by Rusty Gagne (Wiley Publishing). * _Contouring and Sketching For Dummies_ (Wiley Publishing) by Dan Nicklaus and Tamra Wolf is an excellent book that covers the basics of sketching and creating composites of images. * _Compositing and Photocomposition: New Workflows for Digital Photographers_ (Underwood Books) by Tony Rice includes Photoshop tutorials for various techniques such as masking and compositing. * _Photoshop Essentials: Start with Light and Color_ (Wiley Publishing) is an excellent book that offers simple, step-by-step instructions for various Photoshop skills. * _Beyond Photoshop_ is also from Wiley Publishing, and it's filled with additional resources for Photoshop users that run the gamut from the beginner to the highly skilled pro. I recommend it as a follow-up if you've worked through the rest of the Photoshop Essentials book. ## Choosing Your DPI When most people think of digital images, they think of either a jpeg or a raw file. A JPEG file is a _compressed_ file created when you save a file in JPEG format. The result is a smaller file size, which is especially helpful for saving on memory cards and sending via Internet downloads. (See "Organizing Your Scans" for information on preparing Photoshop files for downloading.) Raw files contain _no compression,_ and they provide the finest quality. However, raw files take a lot of memory and slow down your computer. Raw files are preferred by some photographers because they allow users to prepare the files in a number of ways and then export them to JPEG, TIFF, or other formats, depending on the needs of the resulting project. A raw file is unedited by Photoshop and has not undergone a destructive transformation such as compression or demosaicing. In the days before raw files, it was common to make exposures using four color film and then transfer the images to a computer for editing. Raw files were the digital equivalent of those film files. Wednesday, July 15, 2005 Bobby Chacon's new blog The man is finding himself as a blogger. First, Bobby Chacon became the voice of the closed-minded, pinstripe clad Yankees fans. Now, he's become the voice of some of our fellow bloggers. On this most recent post, he questions where all of us are. "Where are we? Just exactly where are we? On what side of the fence are we? What do we want and what are we going to do about it? I have a true sense of doubt of this time. One that's wearing all of us down like a squeeze. And it's sort of like an attack on our country or a war in some other countries. What's going to happen next? What is going to happen to our way of life? Well, it's been on the line for a while I guess. But now it's the time to make a stand. It's time to make something happen. It's time to push back and say 'enough is enough'. But how do you do it? I wish I knew. I wish that someone would say something. I wish someone would say it like he needs to say it. I guess it's going to be me. I don't know. I'd like to share with you a bit on what I was thinking, sharing, sharing with the world. I'm just looking for what I'm feeling and I'm just sharing with you all. As of today I just don't know where I'm going. I know where I don't want to go. I'd rather be out there fighting with you and not in the war with you.
