Exploring the Edit Menu The Edit Menu contains the most frequently used commands that enable you to manipulate images in Photoshop. With the exception of those commands that are only accessible when working in Photoshop (such as Layer Selection), the Edit menu enables you to perform the following actions on your image: * **Create a new file.** If you click the New File icon in the upper-left corner of the Photoshop window, you see an Open dialog box that enables you to open an image or create a new image from a rectangular or square shape. * **Save a copy of the current file.** Click the Save icon and save a file for your image. If the Save As dialog box appears, you can specify a location and filename for the new file. When you finish saving, the new file appears in the image window, usually along the right side. * **Apply a layer mask.** Layers play a major role in image editing. When working in Photoshop, a _layer_ is a group of pixels that you can _mask,_ or hide, or un-mask, to lighten or darken only the pixels that belong to that particular layer. You can then selectively apply effects such as gradients, color fills, and more to only the layer you create a mask for. The Apply Layer Mask button enables you to apply and remove a layer mask to an image. When you click this button, the Apply Layer Mask dialog box appears. You can choose among the following options to apply a mask: * **Create a new layer mask.** A layer mask adds a mask to the current layer. If you create a layer mask, you can use the other layer mask options (described in the following section) to specify how the mask should apply to the image. * **Apply mask with current layer.** You can apply the mask to an active layer to make the pixels in that layer appear after the mask is applied. This setting can be used to continue editing the pixels of the active layer after you apply a mask. * **Create a

Image credit: NASA The International Space Station lit up the Texas sky on Tuesday as the massive cosmic light show known as the Perseid meteor shower began. “Shooting stars are rare and beautiful, and the best one of this year — 2010 — came from a super-bright asteroid,” said Paul Chodas, NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies. “These meteors streak across the sky from the orbit of the Earth, the orbit of the moon, and the orbit of the sun.” NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office predicts that the annual Perseid shower, originating from the debris trail left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, should peak Saturday night, and continue into Sunday. The event is expected to produce up to 60 meteors per hour during its peak. Tuesday night's shower peaked around 5 a.m. UT and Earth's rotation shifted the shower's radiant down in the southern sky from the Orion constellation to the Ursa Major constellation. Chodas has predicted that the shower will peak over the next few nights, with the best rates expected early Saturday morning. “If you have the right conditions at the right time, you can see meteors every clear night in the Northern Hemisphere during the month of August,” Chodas said. “This is the year.” This year, the Spacecraft Emergency Network is the best place to look for meteors. The network consists of around 140 near-Earth asteroid or satellite tracking stations around the world. SENC’s meteor detection software gathers and analyzes signals from the stations, and sends alerts to amateur astronomers via text and email. Dawn is currently on its way to its lowest orbit ever, and will likely spend its first anniversary of flyby far away from Earth.
