And you might even have some that aren't family photos (I do). Or images taken at parties, family gatherings, or in a hotel that aren't on Facebook yet.
While on the topic of commenting on PSDs, I would like to comment on another thing. Recently I began decrying the inability for world-class photographers like myself to get my work online, that is to say, to have any control over my finished images beyond “where did I place this?”. That’s asking too much, I know – the overhead of a personal website and god knows what’s on their minds be it marketing, copyright issues, rights, usage of images and so on, is enough to make me try, again, to take that extra step in making your images a bit more awesome. On the other hand, you can’t exactly order a pair of shoes from a page where you saw the shoes you wanted in the store. You wouldn’t want your pictures on a site called “MuaBai”, would you? Not everyone with a camera takes photos as their job, and we’re definitely not that good. ‘Nuff said.
Now, let’s move on to comments. If you’re a photographer, there’s a good chance you found yourself stuck in the above conversation, waiting for the other person to act up. It might have something to do with the fact that you’ve been talking to your friends, who aren’t photographers, or worse, the employers of these photographers, who are more like bees, flapping around telling everybody to make friends. Well, 'twas partly the point I wanted to make. What’s the point of my photos? It’s not clear. I’m a freelancer and a photographer with a tendency to think of myself as a profoundly talented person, while I work on getting famous one image at a time. At one point, the photographer I was hanging out with said “why don’t you start your own website?”, something that I had tried to do several times in the past, and, honestly, got discouraged from doing. At the time, I wasn’t that into blogging, and felt that my time was better spent elsewhere, anyway. This was before Facebook and Twitter became popular, and you had to build your own website of even, if I am not mistaken, pay to build one. Fast forward to this year, and a friend of mine, “J”, a photographer of some note, approached me with the question “so what is the point of your photos?”. I’ve often been asked before, and it seemed like a chore, but it turned out that it was less of a chore than I had given it credit for, and more a thought-provoking question. I had a morning of meetings with this question hanging over the back of my mind, and I was glad to have this conversation. It forced me to pause and think a little more carefully about my job, and how it differed from that of a lot of other people in the business. After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I’m a photographer because I like taking pictures. There, I said it. I'm not a hip-hop artist, who comes from a family of photographers and makes a living off his art, hoping to crossover into the mainstream. I am just a photographer, and the rest of it is just a byproduct of what I love to do. Building, marketing, distributing, editing (through the company that we discussed earlier) are secondary or tertiary priorities to me.
