The film began filming by accident after the director () was asked by a friend to make a film on the living conditions of farmers. A farmer who was brought to aakkon mass grave, saw a dream and become obsessed with making the film. The more he talked about the film, the more it took shape in his mind. Having made the film, he posted it online, and was soon flooded with enquiries about making a sequel.
Guru Geethaya is a racy, action-packed thriller set in the jungles of southern Sri Lanka in 1979. The film is based on an award-winning novel of the same name written by Sinhala film screenwriter K.R. Premalal. This is his second film as director and it’s the second of a trilogy that will continue throughout the year.
This film is a story of Sri Lanka. Shot in the jungles, aveteran Colombo cinematographer D. U. Jayawardane helmed the lens on Himalaya village. It was also directed by the film’s veteran non-fiction editor P. Selvaraj during the tumultuous 1970s, when the civil war was still in its early stages.
The film’s story begins in Vanni refugee camps where, the Sri Lankan army is starving the substantial population to death. Caught up with an impromptu volcano eruption, the only people left are the residents of a remote Himalayan village. They have remained there since the ‘Era of Boom and Bust’. Unaware of the steep landscape of the Vanni region, the villagers are almost entirely indigenous. Thus, they embody the true indigenous soul of Sri Lanka. The film digs into the direction of Sri Lankan history, investigating the country’s historical context and contemporary life.
