a consortium including ansaldo nucleare and the romanian institute for nuclear research pitesti (institutul de cercetari nucleare pitesti, icn), the state-owned nuclear energy holding company, was selected by the european commission to design and build the 2.4 mwt pool-type reactor, the second-largest of its kind. the reactor will be built at icn's facility in mioveni near pitesti, and will be commissioned in 2027.

in march 2017 the state enterprise for nuclear energy holding company reinvent energy sa (reinvent) was established by the romanian government as the successor to the state-owned nuclear energy holding company romanian nuclear activities authority (raan). in june of the same year a new regulation came into force, which included the provision for the creation of reinvent energy holding sa.

in december 2018 the romanian government established the nuclear activities authority (raan), responsible for activities at the nuclear energy research centre. the raan replaced the national commission for energy and nuclear research (cnepr) and the romanian agency for nuclear energy (rane).

the refurbishment of unit 1 is the subject of a new project that has been launched by romania's minister of economy and financial affairs and the energy minister, as well as by the president of romanias energy company romete. the project also includes the construction of two additional units at sites in iași and suceava.

the romanian energy giant romete and the french state-owned energy company edf signed an agreement in november 2018 for the construction of two new units at the iași site. the new plant will be the fourth gas-fired power plant in romania, following the 2015 launch of unit 1 at hunedoara, the 2014 launch of unit 2 in pitesti, and the 2016 launch of unit 3 in snagov. all three of these units are of the same type as those proposed for iași, although the design of the units at iași is still under review. the agreement for the construction of unit 4 at the suceava site was signed in september 2019. the project's cost is estimated at around 1.5 billion lei.unit 4 is due to come into operation in 2029. the project has been awarded a contract for the supply of steam to the plant by a company owned by the nuclear reactor builder edf.
