I’m happy with LR 5.2 on my desktop. I’ve been using it for a little over a year now, and it works for my purposes. The problem with Photoshop Elements 9 is that you have to use Photoshop to do Photoshop work. In other words, there are serious limitations on what you can do; you have only the Elements interface to Photoshop functionality. Photoshop itself has a much richer user interface and a much bigger user base. And its UI is much easier to use. Photoshop is much more versatile than Elements. For example, Elements has no natural-media editing capability. It doesn’t have a layer masking interface. It doesn’t have the selection tool interface. It has very basic Smart Sharpen and Smart Tone. There are no brushes or layers in Elements. It has no Real Flow or Artistic Blur filters. It has no presets (though there are Lightroom presets). It has no photo collage. It doesn’t have HDR (High Dynamic Range) tools or the Lens Correction interface. And there are others. The list goes on.

However, there are other, bigger issues. I can’t help but think of Lightroom 5 as more like a Photoshop plugin than a standalone application. Can it be that all the ways you used to do things in Photoshop are now possible in Lightroom, only via plugins?

The Artistic Style presets offered by Adobe offer brush strokes, curves and textures. There is a full set of colors to choose from, plus they’re all color corrected, so your images will look exactly the way you had them in your mind. The Adjustments tab lets you tweak the blacks and whites of the photo, while you can adjust the levels using a histogram and the image’s composite.
