By the time the invasion actually began, the war was over, of course. The details of the end of it are too complicated to get into here. He survived, but it cost him a good part of his reputation

The reason the book is boring is that the Nazisaurus was rather more successful and remained in control for a longer time (and it had more successful allies), so there was more time to sort things out after the war. I don't think the book has ever been republished in English, but I gather it is popular in Russia. In Russia, events are often worth less because they happened less recently.

I think that he is still sometimes spoken of as a man who had a special gift for chemistry, but the evidence suggests it was more of a gift for making it a tool of the authorities rather than a force of liberation. (Schematically and technically the book is interesting; the story of the war is very stale. This doesn't apply to Nazisaurus Rex, where a great deal of the book is devoted to the conquest of Russia, which I haven't seen done.)

So I can say that the gas boycott is a really great thing and a direct way to get Putin to back off, but if I don't pay attention to the war and don't pay attention to how differently I'm reacting to it then I can't do much about it. And if I pay attention to it and still ignore it, I could easily wind up being confused into thinking I'm a good person because I'm not doing what is good, when the real problem is that I am conditioned to think like a liberal, which inevitably means that I am thinking like a liberal, but not doing what a liberal would do.

The second world war was a genuinely terrible war. Most of the damage done by the war was just the cost of victory. That's not the same thing. WWII wasn't the first time that Britain has lost a war and no one can blame British people of today for what people did during WWII. Even people of that era did not believe that Germans were guilty for all the damage caused by those years. So the PTSD of the war is not the same thing as the suffering of these two-hundred years ago. Even back then there was a debate about whether the war was worth it, and whether it was really a just war. World Wars I and II are not unique in that respect. I'm sure there was a lot of people in these countries who had lost relatives during the wars and who think that WW1 and WWII were not worth all of this. So, WWII may be a very good reason to fight in this war, but it's not a good reason to invade Germany, at least not in the normal sense. So what would be a good reason for it? The war is terrible, but that's not an excuse to do it. In fact, if you look at the war, there are plenty of very good reasons that each of the governments could do the other is terrible, and war is not always the solution. Not all wars are wars of conquest. And in a lot of them it's both sides. The French Revolution was really about the exact opposite, after all. Switzerland has broken away from its big, powerful neighbours several times. Especially if you have an empire and a national territory that's large enough for an autonomous little nation (and 20 provinces is definitely small enough). Also, though, they had good generals. A lot of small wars in the 19th century were managed with above average competence. WWI is a good example, in the short term. In the long term, we had some national disasters, but nothing remotely as bad. In fact, if you count the cost of the First World War as a cost, the warring countries have suffered better than the neutral ones. 5ec8ef588b
