pitkin flasks were associated with early white liquor production in new york from the early 1800s to the 1850s (noordsy 2003). several flasks of this sort were noted as being associated with the john klein and john h. hans (both of new york) in the 1850s (noordsy 2003). these flasks feature a long and skinny pontil scar on the base with a glass-tipped pontil scar and multiple base finishes as indicated by the following examples:

this flask (gi-2a) is single pattern molded and is patterned on the entire body and base and the neck at about the 20% level (bottom of base and shoulder region) and 32% (neck); it has a very simple, rudely applied, what appears to be a laicized, single parting line type finish that was formed by glass being laid around the neck (lower third of body and base). it has a pointed pontil scar; glassic in the form of one large crack on both the base and the neck; and is described in the catalog as an "ebony" flask (mckearin & wilson 1978; noordsy 2003). the original neck emblements (two loose and ten or so pegged bands of iron) has long been removed. the original finish has been degraded to a burnished finish; which can be caused by the application of a burnish stain similar to "yellow lead" which was used to condition glass to enable it to harden more quickly (page, personal communication, april 22, 2003); or perhaps by heating and cooling the flask. in addition to the washington-eagle flask (gi-2) there are several other flasks that were originally blown in this same type of mold. however, unlike the early gi-2, it appears they were patterned once in the upper portion of the body and also patterned once in the lower portion of the body giving the bottle a asymmetrical form. it seems that some of these flasks had the necks changed from being flat to having a slight arc (like the one pictured to the far right with the cigar butt emblems) either by hand or with the application of mold residue (which would soften the neck and make it easier to insert into the mold cavity). others have reverse patterns on the bases. 5ec8ef588b
