the gameshark was meant to be used with gameboy systems. if you're not currently using a gameboy, or don't need to, you can probably get by without one, and play games on your system the normal way. gamesharks not directly supported for gameboy have fewer options for codes, and fewer useful features as a result. (the gameboy cheats are largely inaccessible via the console, for example).
some cheating devices as well were later given more features; such as devices which could make both ram writes or temporary rom patches (instead of the past gameshark/game genie distinction) or enable cheats only on certain conditions more elaborate than before (such as action replay ds 'on conditional button press' codes) (although there were unintended workarounds to do similar things before that, e.g. using cheat codes to corrupt the program counter and thus potentially enable conditional logic ).

i already owned a ds (and gameshark) for the ps2 and ive been wanting another, this one has some special features, one is being able to save files, (and change other things like difficulty settings) ive always wanted to save my games so i can go on and start again when needed, im also curious if i can create cheat discs, change game difficulty, etc.
gameshark claims that internal file gamescanner is capable of detecting rom revisions and "describes unknown behaviors and functionalities of roms as the only interface for the user" but at that time gameshark as a whole was not a particularly straight forward affair, so it's a bit of a hoax to say the least. since both it and gamegenie became a thing, the former's port has been officially known as game genie or ggh. when you're playing your game, a small device on the gamecube's gameshark socket is handling the interface with the console, and it not only connects to the gamecube via the gameshark port but communicates with the console via the serial port as well.
