Because it’s easy to use, it’s a great app for beginners. Elements is also a great app to try for anyone who already uses Photoshop, but is looking for a less intimidating way of working with it. You may appreciate many of these new features, and you may not.

I am extremely skeptical that a tool as powerful as Lightroom can possibly deliver a slower export than Aperture or (gasp!) iPhoto. I copied the whole catalog from one iPhoto library to another iPhoto library and fired up Lightroom. It completed the copy in ten minutes, and took another ten minutes for the exported catalog to appear. It looked great. The catalog was exactly the same in every way – it even had the exact same default images enabled. With iPhoto I would expect Lightroom to take 5-10 times as long to export the same images. That would be analogous to, say, an iPhoto export of a 4k x 4k image taking ten times as long as the same image exported in iPhoto 3.0.

The “Layer Stacks” feature is available only in Photoshop, but it can be used in InDesign. A “layer stack” actually saves the state of the layer in the file. It becomes a layer that is used for the editing instead of a file. Consider the following example:

In the second image, we have the same file with the same layers, however, we combine them into a “layer stack.” The color of the text, the gradient, and the image have been saved in a “layer stack” and the state of the layer is preserved. So, we have a separate file where we have the color of the text, the gradient, and the image.

If you select a layer with the image, and if you press ALT+CLICK, you simply double-click it. This will open a command prompt window, which starts with the following command: “Select a layer with the image. If the layer contains the layer, double-click it.”
