in the arena, a large, domed room is filled with spectators, including a large crowd of fans. the arena is illuminated by a series of decorative spotlights, including a spotlight on the announcer which is set on a platform in front of a speaker. the announcer is dressed in a uniform similar to that of the galactic gladiators announcer, though without any lights on his jacket.

some of the versions of arena in production were heavily edited. in one, the arena is flooded with deadly nanobots, leaving the contestants wet. the final episode of star trek aired in 1969. the star trek writers were so dismayed by the final version of arena that they almost walked away from the trek franchise. in fact, one of the writers - jerry pournelle - almost quit because of the changes made to the script.
