we have a small staff of full-time cooks, classroom teachers, and housekeepers. our cooks and housekeepers earn a living wage and our cooks receive a competitive salary along with benefits that support their families. our classroom teachers are all passionate about food education and well-being, and help teach and inspire a love for healthy food. we believe in a fair living wage and that teachers deserve to be able to earn a living wage.
mundo verde serves over 300 students each day. there are 20 classrooms, a full-service kitchen, kitchen classrooms, a nutrition kitchen and bathrooms available to all. we have a dedicated play space where students can enjoy recess, play, and we are working to provide some additional outdoor spaces for student play, too.
we have a pta to support our schools communities. parents support our schools through donations to the pta, fundraisers like bake sales, food trucks, and fundraisers, community-wide kid’s fairs like spring celebration and harvest festival, workdays like food day and good earth day, and participating in the csa share program. pta funds are used to pay for extra staff, supplies, and teacher training.
mundo verde has a strong connection to our community and our school community. our relationship with our school community has strengthened over time. we continue to build partnerships with local farmers, farms, and markets, including half moon farm, trinity farm, anova foods, village market, breadworks, and owego community market. we have been able to integrate a number of community projects, including community garden, school gardens, sustainable excursions, fair trade and csa shares, and a food-related elementary school day in partnership with farm artistry. we've heard that some of the community partners and their projects have enjoyed working with mundo verde, too.
