Dsp Ganesh Rao Pdf 14
The first-century CE Jain text, Jain Agamas, states that one of Ganesh's incarnations was carried by a Lomahiri, or Great Fish, and that on the way he is accompanied by two animals, one a white and one a black panther (Gupta S, Mitra AD. The Nalanda-Dhanga volume. In Agamanid-yana, pp. 1-29. Ahmedabad: Dvara; 1982; Bhavada Publishing; 1995). The Jain text further states that Ganesh dwells in Mangalavana and that he is the "son of Vaishravana and the father of all his sons, and the father of all creatures, past and present." Another text states: "He is resplendent in his own powers and his name is Rantideva..." F. Reddy BS. Names of the Lord of Creatures. Ahmedabad: Panu, 1975, p. 138; Gross EJ, Bacchi JK, Mozely JC, Sadevanu KS. Amesha. In Sthanagri, vol. 1, pp. 21-32. Bombay: Radium, 1970; Amrita M. in-sagar: a Encyclopaedia of Man. Bombay: Manohar; 1989.
In the Hindu texts, Ganesh appears to have many different manifestations, and these differ from one Indian region to the next. The Puranas tell of Ganesh as a king, fond of hunting, dancing and drinking wine. He is also said to have emanated from the navel of Brahma, and is frequently represented as a youth. In general, he is said to have been born on the day of the winter solstice as a son of Shiva and Parvati, and he is also the son of Vishnu's consort Lakshmi. According to the later texts, Ganesh is associated with magic, scholarship and the arts. Three of Ganesh's four arms are said to have been emblazoned with magical symbols, and he also has a navel-like mark on his back. His four heads often appear to be imbued with knowledge and wisdom. As he is aligned with the Sun, during the summer season the left side of his face is said to be bright, but during the winter he is presented with his whiteness, while in the spring his hair is said to be spreading, and during the autumn it falls to the back of his head and seems to grow in folds. Because he may be considered an avatar of Brahma, he is also generally equated with the concept of creation. The great Hindu god Vishnu is generally considered to be Ganesh's father, as is said by the Puranas. His mother Parvati is the sister of Shiva, and his brother Skanda is also a popular representation of Ganesh. Durga and Shakti (Goddess) are said to be the mother and the wife of Shiva, and they are said to be his mothers as well. Although he is usually represented as a child-like deity, Ganesh in myth is said to have been the creator of all life.
Another popular form of Ganesha is the elephant. The most popular folk tale, told both by Hindus and Buddhists, explains how Ganesha became an elephant. Ganesha arrives on earth as a swan and the elephant god Nagasena asks the gods for help in breaking the spell that has transformed him into a swan. The gods favour the request of a swan and Ganesha is transformed into an elephant. Ganesha's upper half is that of a man and the lower half is that of an elephant. The upper half is the head and the lower half is the trunk. Ganesha's tail, the floral skirt, or kusti, is attached to his heels. The most well known and worshiped icon of Ganesha is the elephant-headed one. This is the form that we all know and associate with Ganesha. It is the one we see in all the temples. But it is popularly believed that this form belongs to Ganesha only during the time of the rains. During the hot season he takes another form of a man with a body on one side and the head of a cow or bull. The number of arms vary from two to 16. However, especially in the case of Ganesh with two arms, the lower right hand is usually used to carry Ganesh's favourite laddoo sweet which holds a pearly white appearance to represent the brilliance of his light andthe lower left arm holds his own broken tusk. The various hands are said to represent the seven chakras, or spiritual centres, through which the light of the dhyana rasa or “sleep/meditation” flows. In his two-armed icon it is believed that the laddoo sweet, held in the lower right hand, holds the universal soul of the whole world.
