It all started in 1958, when he won the Palme d’Or for his first feature, “Chapa de Rama”. He’s now at his career high-point, winning an Academy Award for the 2002 movie “City of God”, which introduced him to much-loved American movie fan, Quentin Tarantino. He took a hiatus from film for a few years, but when he returned, he found he had a newfound passion for the big screen. After having shot “Brazil”, he went on to shoot “Apollo 13” and “The English Patient”, and for the first time, he began shooting in color. And while his career is full of memorable moments, he’s happy to have taken the time to reflect on the shoot of “Brazil”. Fandor: Tell us about the production of this film. Mierle Ladio: “Brazil” was the first feature I did in color. Color has a lot of different aspects, one of them is being able to see the faces better. I loved the idea of having a film in color and I was familiar with black and white, so I wanted to do something different. It was easy for me to adapt to color. What’s interesting to me is that while the history of the Irish in America is pretty well known, our history with the Irish in Ireland is much, much more interesting and entertaining.
