He was born to a very modest middle class family in Bengal - his father was a doctor and his mother was a housewife. During the British rule, he was very smart and gifted. He passed the Senior Cambridge exam in his second year of schooling and the Junior Cambridge in his third year. It was during this period that he began to seriously consider the world of engineering. He was brilliant, but was surrounded by men who idolized him for that very reason - to be an engineer, they felt, was to be a demi-god. But Dr. Khan had this vision, and he was so successful in his work for public and private buildings in Calcutta, and England, that his legend grew. He is still the favorite of engineering students across the globe.

In 1884, at the age of 18, Dr. Fazlur Khan passed examinations in architecture at the Presidency College in Calcutta. After winning the prestigious annual award for the best architect of the year, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Ecole Polytechnique, in Paris. After graduating from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1886 with a diploma, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and earned a degree in civil engineering with highest honors. For the next four years, he continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Le Havre. He returned to India in May 1889, where he started working as an assistant engineer with the French Irrigation Commission at Calcutta.
