i am using ssms 2008 r2. i downloaded the sql ce vs tools package (1.8 mb), and it installed successfully, but when i tried to open the db using the object explorer, the sql ce engine dialog is not showing up. are there any steps that i missed to install it?

sql server ver. 651 and above does not support to import.sql file into sql server. please upgrade sql server to latest version if you want to import. otherwise you need to convert the file to sql script first by using sql server tools and then import the file in sql server.

if you are looking for migration tools between sql server 2005 to sql server 2008, you can use free sql server migration assistant from microsoft. in your sql server 2005 database, go to sql server management studio and execute the following command in your sql server 2005 instance

sp_msforeachdb

 if you want to migrate sql server 2000 databases to sql server 2008, you can use free sql server migration utility from microsoft. in your sql server 2000 instance, go to sql server management studio and execute the following command in your sql server 2000 instance

sp_msforeachdb

  is your database name in sql server 2005.  is your database name in sql server 2000.

I tried deleting it and reinstalling the package and also tried installing 2008 R2's SQLEXPRESS to see if the same package could be made availabe to the new version - no go.
