Response of Mature Shrimp Caudal Gills to Cold Exposure. The cause of shrimps huddled together when the temperature is below the critical thermal minimum (CTM) has been elusive. We investigated the potential role of mature shrimps on stimulating their smaller, immature conspecifics into forming a protective huddle and subsequently observed the change in discharge activity of the adductor muscles of the inner gills. The electrical activity was recorded during cold exposure in shrimp (Caridina metajaponica) with different sizes. The CTM of the mature shrimps was 24°C, which was not consistent with the data from other reported shrimp species. When the shrimp reached the CTM, there was no stimulation of the immature shrimps when the mature shrimps were isolated. However, the spindles which were stimulated by the contact of the immature shrimps stopped when the immature shrimps were in a huddle. This phenomenon was observed until the immature shrimps were separated from the huddle by blocking the gill pore. This study revealed that the shrimps in the huddle would close their gills to conserve energy. In addition, this phenomenon was correlated with the decrease in the electrical activity of the adductor muscles.
