its a great example of a film that desperately wants to be one thing and manages to be more. there are several reasons why pacific rim turns out to be better than it probably should have been. first, and most simply, it havent turned into a sequel to godzilla vs. mechagodzilla or any other similarly ridiculous sequel. as a result, its only major downside is that it doesnt quite live up to the level of kaiju action that del toro clearly envisions. second, kaiju/giant monster movies generally tend to be a bit too reliant on their cgi (and in this case, not even that is really their cgi, as edwards said, it was just computer-generated puppetry). here, edwards has a few people in suits wielding swords and flailing around, but its far less than in a movie like godzilla vs. megazilla. in a related vein, the action sequences are pretty, but not particularly gripping. like spielberg, del toro has a way of making these sequences more than just visual splendor, but edwards just doesnt have that knack. third, the movie is great when it wants to be. the film isnt just a dozen bits of cgi, but rather a large-scale monster movie that actually focuses on the monsters. what would the monster movies of the 1940s and 1950s have been like if the attention had not been taken off of them? what would the movies that attempted to emulate those films have looked like? the answer is, they would have been messy, dumb, gross and ugly. edwards is able to keep the film interesting, effective and enjoyable even while it struggles to find its place in the world. james dyer
