One of the most moving and successful work by Farhadi, the debut feature by Iranian director Golshifteh Farahani - one that is well worth seeing, the About Elly - is touching, disturbing and quite artful. Based on a true story, this moral fable is about three women, two in Tehran, one from the Caspian sea, who, lured by love or by money, have to make the tough choice of abandoning their family and their traditions for an incomprehensible love.
I grew up in the American South. Being the daughter of a professor, I was surrounded by books and art. Sometimes it was easy to believe that these things were the foundation of our society. But we also had all of the racism, bigotry, even more poverty and ignorance. People could be extraordinarily cruel to each other. All of these things somehow seemed like part of the “American Way.” That’s why the scenes in About Elly that depict the sadness of, shall we say, a privileged lifestyle, really surprised me. In Iran, these things are done in secret. For all its veiled references to American mores, this movie is a kind of portrait of the Iranian community in America. The eternal blues were constant and I guess, for me, the work of About Elly is like a magic mirror – it shows something that most of us in this country can’t see…
Pleasant, one-legged Pashmina chaperones the last weekend in June as its just the two of them; their own paradise with no neighbours, nothing to do and nothing to see. They lie under a shady tree, where they argue until both are forced to appreciate and connect with each other; an unfamiliar feeling for one of them. A traditional Iranian film could show a typical family at home, but About Elly relies on intimate glimpses into the two protagonists’ lives.
