a third weekend of a halloween franchise movie is always a smart business move. though its not like venom and joker have created a new paradigm for movies in this summer run, the uptick in dollars against an older audience should help box office suss out how they end up playing. unlike the benchmark openings of halloween 4 and halloween 5: the return of michael myers, this one has a lot to prove and a marketing machine that hasn’t been used to this degree in quite some time (laurie strode isnt depicted in traditional halloween costumes, as she is seen teaching in halloween 6). a movie that would be largely unfamiliar to the average streaming viewer (its not clear if there will be any theatrical showings for his fans) should hold up strongly with the streamers if they can boot it.
in fact, we’ve seen that older audiences who see horror pics at the box office come out more than older moviegoers who see horror pics at home. in most cases, the audience who sees the movies in theatres are more religious. thats a little more than 43% of the population (based on 2016 polling).
most famously, the new film begins with myers returning home to his mother, laurie strode, whom he has not seen since he was a young child. she remarries and lives on a quiet suburban street with her new family. hes on her doorstep for her birthday, so she invites him in to plant that kiss on her cheek. yet he instead grabs her with a fierce, knife-edged embrace. in the moment, she believes hes telling her that hes sorry for all the hurt and suffering hes caused, that shes forgiven. later that night, myers bursts in on laurie, telling her hes come for her. now, he really does have a knife in his hand. hes holding it over her face, hes telling her that hes here to finish what hes started. hes saying shes not alone, that im coming for you next, and there will be more that will come after you. it will be a long night, she tells him. her hes-not-sorry kid is going to kill her. the back door bursts open and a masked figure runs in, killing some bad guy before hes shot. this is michael myers. he just wants to finish what hes started, using a knife to stick its blade in her lungs. in a classic case of halloween fateh apportioning death, myers begins his revenge by murdering laurie at the moment her son grows into a man. its no good for us to stop this, she tells michael, but she hesitates, hes heart taking off at her. no, he says, he wont let you stop him. a grim and deadly sequence ensues, leading into the final shot of a mounted policeman shooting michael, and hes organs spilling out, before michaels body crumbles, with only his teeth remaining. its a piercingly precise ending, and it also provides a bit of supernatural foreshadowing: since myers only lets his heart stay on after he kills his mother, the notion that hes not finished yet will be repeated in the sequels. yet its more than a throwaway detail; all signs of myers are erased from this final shot. its a solid setup for the sequels, which will begin with a taut, hitchcockian sequence in which the grown up michael takes his terrible revenge on a new set of victims. this time, the new killing spree takes place in rural illinois rather than the seaside california of haddonfield.
however, while it is refreshing to see halloween kills take these characters in a new direction, it also raises a lot of important questions. it's been a long time since we've seen the characters, and the world they occupy, outside of halloween. while in the last two sequels we were in familiar locales and experienced a few memorable moments with familiar faces, we haven't seen them be especially real in a while. it's different enough, then, to establish that this is a character driven story, rather than sticking to the fairly predictable playbook of psycho's charles, it's sequels, and friday the 13th's jason for that matter. although the mode is a little strange, this is by far the strongest horror film to come from the franchise, and that's no small thing. this new take on the history and mythology of michael myers is also no slouch when it comes to its scares, letting laurie strode's bloody demise linger longer than it really needs to. what makes this film so successful is its ability to subvert genre expectations, and deliver a solid fright film. its not afraid to break the rules of horror as it stands in order to tell a story it cares about, and it really excels in that endeavor. it also helps that carpenter, who's only returned for a cameo this time, is on hand to add a dose of nostalgia to proceedings. after years of trying, the carpenter produced halloween films are finally beginning to be recognized as some of the best horror films ever made. it takes a great deal of balls to pull off a reboot, like this one, and the fact that it does succeed is no small feat. 5ec8ef588b
