as inky identified, malicious actors began sending this phishing email to active craigslist users who were actively advertising jobs or seeking work. a few simple steps may have prevented them from accessing the users real address and compromising their account. first, they needed to know where on craigslist the ads were posted. with the title and body stripped, they needed the postcode and listing type. with that, they could use yahoo webmaster tools to find the email address for the page owner and send a message. if the email was from the right person, it would eventually be forwarded to the real address. craigslist is also able to leverage spamhaus, which compiles a list of ips (internet protocol) that are known to be involved in spam and/or malware. a day or two later, craigslist would likely filter out that ip from being used for these emails. lastly, inky found a glaring hole in craigslist email security. the site allows users to register an email account, but it has no system for verifying the email address. if an email account is registered, it can be made the email address for the account. in other words, anyone can register an account with a name they own. they can sign up for any email account with the hope that it gets sent to a legitimate account. in the case of craigslist mailer, it should have been obvious that the email accounts sign up and sign in page was not the real account.
